Death sentence upheld on six gang members in China: report
A court in northwest China has upheld the death sentences of six gang members convicted of murdering eight people in a brutal crime spree, state press reported Thursday. The Gansu provincial high court upheld the death sentences that were initially handed down by an intermediate court in the provincial capital of Lanzhou in November last year, Xinhua news agency said. Executions in China usually take place after the provincial high court turns down the appeal and upholds the original verdict, and after an execution order from the nation's supreme court is issued. According to Xinhua, the six gang members led by two brothers, Zhang Renmeng and Zhang Renhu, committed the murders in 2005 and 2006, robbing their victims of their banks cards and then stealing from their accounts. The gang was convicted of taking a total of 250,000 yuan (37,000 dollars). The thieves murdered all but one of their victims after accosting them on the street, Xinhua said. China executes more people than the rest of the world combined, with the nation last year putting to death more than 1,700 people out of a global total of almost 2,400, according to Amnesty International. As China does not publish full data on the death penalty, rights groups say the numbers executed could be far higher.

The former head of the company that owns Beijing Capital International Airport was executed Friday, convicted of bribery and embezzlement totalling nearly 16 million dollars, state media reported.

Li Peiying, former chairman and general manager of Capital Airports Holding Company (CAH), which also operates numerous other airports throughout China, was put to death in the eastern city of Jinan, Xinhua news agency said.

He was put to death after the Supreme People's Court upheld his sentence, according to the agency.

Li, 60, was convicted in February of accepting bribes totalling 26.61 million yuan (3.9 million dollars) and embezzling 82.5 million yuan while in his post from 1995 to 2003.

CAH, which is under the Civil Aviation Administration of China, is a major state-owned enterprise.

The group has more than 30 airports, including the flagship Beijing Capital International Airport, manages assets of more than 100 billion yuan and has more than 38,000 staff.

Massive corruption has emerged as one of the greatest scourges attending China's economic resurgence in the past three decades and the Communist Party often hands down harsh sentences to show it is serious about the problem.

China Internet rehab camp shut amid arrests over death: report
A rehabilitation camp in south China for Internet addicts has been closed and 13 suspects detained by police for alleged involvement in the beating to death of a teenager, state press said Saturday.

The suspects worked for the Qihang Salvation Training Camp in the Guangxi region and are under investigation for inflicting intentional injury and the illegal operation of the camp, Xinhua news agency said.

Deng Senshan, 15, died last Sunday after he was allegedly beaten by trainers at the camp where his parents had sent him to cure his Internet addiction, previous reports said.

The unlicensed camp, located at the Guangxi Electronic Polytechnical School, was closed Friday afternoon, Xinhua, citing a government official.

The 122 teenagers enrolled in the camp have been retrieved by their parents, it added.

The case triggered outrage on the Internet here and drew worldwide publicity, while medical experts called for specific laws and regulations on the diagnosis and treatment of Internet addiction.

"The market of Internet addiction treatment in China is in a total mess due to lack of diagnostic standards and treatment guidelines," Xinhua quoted Tao Ran, director of China's first Internet addiction clinic at Beijing's Military General Hospital, as saying.

"The government should end this as soon as possible."

Tao said Internet addiction was a disease which needs medical treatment rather than the "ineffective" military-style training used by some rehab centres.

China has the world's largest number of Internet users with 338 million -- more than the entire population of the United States.

More than 10 million of the country's 100 million teenage web surfers are Internet addicts, the China Daily said on Tuesday, citing a survey by the China Youth Internet Association last year.
