Japan panel recommends defence policy changes: reports
Tokyo (AFP) July 27, 2010
A Japanese government panel will recommend deploying more armed forces in coastal areas that have seen heavy Chinese naval traffic and relaxing rules on nuclear arms transfers, media reported Tuesday. The expert panel argues that Japan's Cold-War era defence guidelines have become outdated and that the pacifist nation must prepare for "contingencies" on the Korean Peninsula and in the Taiwan Strait, and small-scale invasions. The recommendations will be sent early next month to Prime Minister Na ... read more

New Delhi (AFP) July 23, 2010
US military chief Admiral Mike Mullen said on Friday that China had adopted an increasingly aggressive stance on the high seas, with Beijing pushing territorial claims. New China floods feared as Yangtze swells
Chongqing, China (AFP) July 23, 2010
China, already reeling from deadly floods, braced Friday for a potential new deluge on the Yangtze downstream from the huge Three Gorges Dam as its reservoir's level hit a high for the year. The warnings came as officials sought to dampen expectations that the dam could completely tame the swelling river amid the worst flooding in a decade, which has left more than 1,100 people dead or missi ... more

Fewer Tibetans fleeing to the Dalai Lama
Dharamshala, India (AFP) July 25, 2010
The Tibetan community in exile headed by the Dalai Lama is a constant irritant for China, but Beijing has hit upon a way to weaken the movement: starve it of new arrivals. An almost empty dormitory in the gloomy main reception centre for Tibetan exiles in Dharamshala, the Indian hilltown home to the community, is a graphic illustration of changes that have taken place over the last 18 months. India has sheltered Tibetans since 1959, when the Dalai Lama fled his homeland in fear for his life afte ... read more
