China on Tuesday brought down the curtain on its "Two Sessions" annual political meetings, after lawmakers rubber-stamped a flurry of legislation at a closing ceremony in Beijing.

"I hereby announce the conclusion of the third session of the 14th National People's Congress (NPC)," senior Communist Party official Li Hongzhong said, a day after the end of its sister meeting of the country's political advisory body.

Nearly 3,000 delegates gathered in the capital's Great Hall of the People on Tuesday afternoon before President Xi Jinping entered a cavernous hall to the sound of rousing martial music.

Li then kicked off proceedings, standing in for NPC Standing Committee chairman Zhao Leji, whose absence was attributed to a "respiratory infection".

The delegates then voted on a series of legislative documents, almost unanimously passing annual work reports from the national government as well as the supreme court and top public prosecutor.

They also approved resolutions on central and local budgets, the annual economic and social development plan, and an amendment to the lawmakers' law.

In practice, voting at the Two Sessions is tightly controlled, and legislation is pre-approved by the party.

"The meeting has successfully completed each item on the agenda (and) fully carried forward democracy," Li said.

"Let us unite even more closely around the Party centre with Comrade Xi Jinping at its core... and struggle unrelentingly for the great endeavour of the rejuvenation of the Chinese people!" he added, to rapturous applause.
