Former Brazilian president Dilma Rousseff has been discharged from a Chinese hospital where she stayed for seven days with an inner ear disorder, her team said Friday.

A statement from her press office said the 77-year-old had left the hospital on Thursday and "was working normally at the headquarters of the New Development Bank (BRICS bank) in Shanghai."

Rousseff was admitted to the Shanghai East International Medical Center on February 21 due to a case of vestibular neuritis, an inflammation of the nerve that controls balance, her team said on Tuesday.

Rousseff became Brazil's first female president in 2010 after being anointed by Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva -- who could not run again at the time as he had served two consecutive terms in office.

She was impeached during her second term in 2016 for breaking budget laws.

After his re-election for a third term, Lula in 2023 appointed Rousseff to head the NDB, which was formed in 2014 by BRICS members Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa.

Brazil this year holds the rotating presidency of BRICS, and will host a summit for member nations in Rio de Janeiro in July.
